Trixie Lectric

The Black Griffin, Canterbury, Monday 12 August 2013

That The Black Griffin could attract a full to capacity crowd on a Monday night to see the five piece all female rock band Trixie Lectric showed that although having only formed in March this year that this is a band already developing a dedicated following and making waves. This is also confirmed by their ever lengthening bookings list.

Concentrating at the present on a fine and inspired choice of covers in which to present their exhilarating sound fronted by Ella's soulful and charismatic vocals, she and the rest of the band comprising Liz/bass, Holly/guitar, Jo/guitar and Lucy/drums have many original musical ways of making these classics inhabit new life and vigour.

Opening an impressively gripping and professional quality show The Kinks' You Really Got Me was delivered with such enthralling enthusiasm that with one song they grabbed rapt attention from their audience. Feeling Good received a generous sprinkling of that Trixie Lectric fairy grunge dust ... causing it to grow rock legs and strut about, closely followed by the irony of an all female band performing James Brown's It's A Man's World and reclaiming it superbly.

Remaining with the soul vibe Etta James, I Just Want To Make Love To You united the crowd in joyful noisy appreciation of these newcomers to the live rock circuit.

Peggy Lee's Fever worked a treat segueing marvellously into a wild version of Hit The Road Jack performed at a speedy velocity that had the bar buzzin' with high energy, and just when you thought things couldn't get any better, they did, with an incredible version of Come Together followed by T Rex's Telegram Sam snapping at its heels, and then peaking with Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love.

There were many highlights during a wonderful set but if I had to pick one then it would be Neil Young's Rockin' In The Free World during which the Dutch crowd who were in appeared to be dancing to transcendence ... rock and soul music at this terrific  standard can do that to you! Catch the high voltage Trixie Lectric as soon as you can, it's potent, skilled and the real deal ... the current is mighty strong !

Sadly, Trixie Lectric are no more - but I am sure that the individuals will be heard again; the sooner the better!  Meanwhile, this video survives: Rockin' In The Free World
